Scripture Studies

Close readings of specific passages, working through the text verse by verse, pressing on the interpretive questions that matter, and following the argument where it leads. These are not sermons or devotionals. They are attempts at honest exegesis.

Romans 1
The Gospel, Wrath, and the God Who Gives Over

The thesis of Romans, the wrath of God against those who suppress the truth, and what it means that God “gave them over” to their lusts, their passions, and their debased minds, three times, in verses 24, 26, and 28.

Romans 2
Therefore You Are Without Excuse

Chapter 1 indicted “they.” Chapter 2 turns on the reader: “you.” Paul catches anyone who judged the sinners of chapter 1 while practicing the same things, and asks whether they think they will escape God’s judgment.

Romans 3
Let God Be True

Is all of Israel saved? Does God’s faithfulness depend on ours? And if God brings good from sin, does that make sin permissible? Paul answers all three with the same force: may it never be.
